Bournemouth University

Overview

Bournemouth University is a university in and around the large south coast town of Bournemouth, UK (although its main campus is actually situated in neighbouring Poole). It has several well respected (John Kimble, 1999) departments including The School of Health and Social Care, The School of Services Management, The Business School, School of Design, Engineering & Computing and the Media School, recognised as the only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice. In 2009 the University of Bournemouth will have a four star training hotel for students within the School of Services Management, it will be the first in the UK. As a university well known for its focus on professional courses, the University of Bournemouth regards research as a vital component for underpinning a high-quality curriculum and for maximising the University of Bournemouth's contribution to the regional and national economies. The University of Bournemouth has a variety of specialist research groups including The Market Research Group. The University of Bournemouth's heraldic motto is Discere Mutari Est (To Learn is to Change).

Accommodation

The University of Bournemouth can guarantee a place in University accommodation if you are an international student (non-EU) who is starting your course in October, and who apply for a room before the middle of August.
For postgraduate students starting courses in January, accommodation may be available in Winterbourne House, a purpose built 28 room residence. Places here are limited and not guaranteed, but Accommodation Services will do their best to offer alternative suitable accommodation if a room is not available.
Accommodation can be applied for when an unconditional offer has been accepted by the student. The application form for University of Bournemouth accommodation can be found online and must be returned by the middle of August for students starting courses in September/October. When the Accommodation Service receives the application they will write back, normally via e-mail with the offer of a place. This place must be accepted and a deposit paid within the timescale specified in the offer of accommodation.

Campus

The University of Bournemouth has two campuses: Talbot Campus and Lansdowne Campus. Talbot Campus is situated in Poole, on the boundary with Bournemouth. It is where the main University of Bournemouth buildings are located, including the students' union and the main library. There is also a doctor's surgery, Dylan's and The Loft bars, student refectory, Uni shop, Barclays Bank, Waterstones and Endsleigh Insurance situated on campus. Lansdowne Campus is just outside Bournemouth's town centre, with the University of Bournemouth’s buildings located around Christchurch Road and Oxford Road. Unlike Talbot, Lansdowne is not a self-contained campus. 

Health centre

The Student Medical Centre is based in Talbot House, Talbot Campus, and is available to all University of Bournemouth students. The Medical Centre offers:  General medical care  Family planning, including routine and emergency contraception  Travel advice  Immunisations – including Yellow Fever  Minor surgery

Location

Bournemouth, in the county of Dorset, is a long-established tourist destination and attracts visitors from all over the UK and beyond.

With 2,000 acres of award-winning parks and gardens, you can always find somewhere to sit and read a book or newspaper, or even study. There are theatres, concert venues and cinemas within the town as well as numerous bars and restaurants.
