University of Bath

Overview

The University of Bath is one of the UK’s leading universities, with an international reputation for research and teaching at the highest academic standard. It has a small, friendly campus near the city of Bath. The University is located 170km west of London, and the University is home to 10,000 full-time students, including 2500 international students from more than 120 different countries. The University's 200 acre parkland campus is 2km from the historic city centre of Bath.
Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage City with a unique combination of tradition, culture and colour. It is one of the most visited cities outside of London for international tourists, with striking views, beautiful parks and iconic architecture, such as the Royal Crescent. The Roman Baths date back almost 2000 years and can still be visited today.
It is one of only three cities in the world to be on UNESCO's World Heritage list. Its architecture, Medieval Abbey, world famous Georgian squares and sweeping crescents built of honey-coloured stone, all combine to make it one of Europe's most remarkable cities. It is a vibrant, cosmopolitan, safe and welcoming place and hosts many festivals and events throughout the year.

Ranking

The University was ranked 13th in the UK in the Times Good University Guide 2011. Its healthy showing in league tables may be one reason for its popularity – it has never been out of the top 20 in The Times League Table. Students like the “small and friendly” image the University projects, and one of the lowest dropout rates in Britain suggests that they are well supported.
The University has been ranked in the top 40 in a list of the best universities in Europe published today. It was ranked the 38th best in Europe and the 15th best in Britain, narrowly missing a place in the top 100 universities in the world with a placing of 103.
Only 30 British universities made it into the list of the top 200 universities in the world. The ranking was compiled by the Times Higher Educational Supplement from surveys of 1,300
The University of Bath's major academic strengths have been the physical sciences, mathematics, engineering and technology. Today, it is also strong in management, humanities and the social sciences. Courses place a strong emphasis on vocational education; with many industry links, the University recommends students to take a one-year industry placement in the penultimate year of the course, although it has recently removed formal recognition of these placements from students' final degree certificates. According to the latest government assessments, Bath has 15 subjects rated "excellent" (the highest on the scale). These are: Pharmacy & Pharmacology; Business & Management (AMBA accredited); Architecture & Civil Engineering; Economics; Computer Science; Electronic & Electrical Engineering; Mechanical Engineering (IMechE accredited); Mathematics, Statistics and Operational research; Education; Molecular Biosciences; Biosciences; Physics and Astronomy; Politics; Hospitality, Leisure, Recreation, Sport and Tourism; Social Policy and Administration.
