Buckingham University

Overview

The University of Buckingham is the only degree-awarding independent university in the United Kingdom. The university has the highest ranking in the UK for student satisfaction. Its highest-rated departments are English, Business, and Law.
The main campuses are in Buckingham. The upper campus covers Law and Science. The river-side campus covers Humanities, Business, Social Sciences, Biomedical science, and Education. Teaching also takes place in London, in Grosvenor Place, at the home of one of the partner institutions: the European School of Economics.

Location

Buckingham is in the heart of south-east England, a thriving market town 50 miles from London and 20 miles from Oxford. Easy access by road and rail and proximity to London’s airports support our strong national and international connections. It has grown rapidly over the past 25 years. There are many historic buildings, mainly of Georgian appearance, restored and renovated after a disastrous fire in 1725 destroyed much of the old town. Buckingham is blessed with some great surrounding counties, with plenty to offer, whatever your taste. From shops, pubs and restaurants to idyllic country retreats and walks, you will always find something to do outside the University Campus.
Cities such as Oxford and Milton Keynes are within a 30 minute drive. Silverstone, the home of the British Grand Prix, Stowe Landscape Gardens and Towcester Racecourse are all within a short drive. Take a look at what the area has to offer.

Reputation and Ranking

Times Higher Education reported that the University's 2008 graduates had the highest employment rate after six months in Britain.  In recent years the University has consistently ranked highly in student satisfaction surveys. For example, Times Higher Education reported that Buckingham was ranked first in 2006, 2007 and 2008 in the NSS or National Student Survey of student satisfaction. This is because the university is best known for continuing the tradition of "tutorial" (i.e small group) teaching which its founders brought over from the University of Oxford. While there are seminars and lectures, much teaching is done in small groups of 4 to 8 students, with one member of staff. It is this personalized teaching which gives the university its distinctive mood and ethos. The staff-student ratio is 1:8.4, which is high among UK universities.

Services for International Students

The University of Buckingham provides collection services from five major airports in the UK and several courses and classes to help students adjust to life in the UK.

Accomodation

Currently there are two main campus sites - Hunter Street and Verney Park each of which are fully furnished accommodation either modern purpose-built halls, all with kitchen & bathroom facilities or converted houses.

Welfare Support

The University of Buckingham provides support for both Health and Emotional problems. Its counsellor, Tracey Smith, is well trained and experienced and can provide aid to students on Campus or arrange specialist help from outside agencies.
