Overview

The University of Edinburgh was founded in 1582 and is a renowned centre for teaching and research in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. The University of Edinburgh was the sixth university to be established in the British Isles, making it one of the ancient universities of Scotland and Britain. The University of Edinburgh is amongst the largest and most prestigious in the world and currently ranks in the world top 25, ahead of some of the Ivy League institutions.
The University of Edinburgh was established by a Royal Charter granted by James VI in 1582. Former rectors include Winston Churchill, Earl Kitchener, Alexander Fleming, William Gladstone, David Lloyd George and Stanley Baldwin.
The undergraduate 2006–7 gender split is 57.4% female, 42.6% male. 2006–7 undergraduates by entry domicile: Scotland 46.9%; rest of UK 35.8%; rest of EU 6.6%; rest of world 10.8%. Proportion of undergraduates from state schools or colleges 66.8%. Ratio of undergraduate applications to accepted applicants 10.83:1 (note that the number of accepted applicants, those expected to arrive, is only a proxy for the number of entrants).

All freshers (1st year University students) from outside Edinburgh are guaranteed an offer of University of Edinburgh accommodation, with certain conditions.
The University of Edinburgh accommodation ranges from the catered to self-catered, the modern to the traditional. Accommodation is based at over 25 sites, all located within a short walk or bus ride of Edinburgh's centre.

Health centre

The University of Edinburgh has a full range of on-campus Health facilities with doctors, nurses and dentists. All students have full access to the health centre and all health care fees are fully covered by the National Health Service for full time students.

It is considered by some as one of the greenest and most architecturally beautiful cities in Europe often referred to as the "Athens of the North". Edinburgh University plays an integral role in the city, contributing to its vibrant atmosphere. The city has been voted ‘Favourite UK City’ six years running.
