Overview

Founded in 1451, the University of Glasgow has a tradition of excellence as the fourth oldest university in the United Kingdom.
University of Glasgow students walk in the footsteps of scientist Lord Kelvin, economist Adam Smith and pioneer of television John Logie Baird, among many others. Throughout its history Glasgow has fostered the talents of six Nobel laureates, one Prime Minister, Scotland's inaugural First Minister and the country's first female medical graduates.
The University of Glasgow has more listed buildings than any other university in the UK (104). The neo-Gothic main building was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. His son added the impressive spire in 1887. The University of Glasgow is one of the world’s top 100 universities. By continuing to invest in internationally excellent research and by providing an outstanding learning environment for talented students from all backgrounds, the University of Glasgow’s aim is not only to maintain this position but to improve upon it, thereby retaining its status as one of the select number of institutions which are regarded as being the best in the world. The University of Glasgow is the fourth oldest university in the United Kingdom and has nearly 16000 undergraduates, 4000 postgraduates and 4000 adults in continuing education. The University welcomes students from over 80 countries. The University of Glasgow is a major research powerhouse, with an annual research contract income in the top ten of UK universities. An exceptional 96% of University of Glasgow research-active staff are in areas which have been independently assessed as producing research of international importance. The University of Glasgow’s main campus is located in the cosmopolitan West End of Glasgow, just three miles from the vibrant city centre. Since 1870, the University of Glasgow has stood in the West End as a city landmark, with its distinctive profile silhouetted against the skyline.

Ranking

Since 2006, the University of Glasgow has appointed nearly 300 new academic teaching staff, including 60 professors.
The University of Glasgow has received elite 5* grades for its courses English Language and Literature (including Scottish Language and Literature), European Studies, Psychology, Exercise Science & Medicine, and Infection & Immunity. Other key areas include: the British Heart Foundation Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre, the Glasgow Biomedical Research Centre and the Wolfson Medical School; the University's Creative Writing Masters and the only university department dedicated to Scottish Literature in the world; the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, with approved status from the American Veterinary Medical Association.
The University of Glasgow’s Faculty of Engineering is the oldest in the UK, with the only Department of Aerospace Engineering in Scotland. Students can access wind tunnel facilities to test aerofoils, cars and bridges.
The University of Glasgow’s Business School is one of an elite group in the world to have achieved accreditation by the Association of Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Services for International Students

Over the years, the University of Glasgow has developed a comprehensive range of support systems which are there for you whenever you need them.
The Student Counselling and Advisory Service forms one part of the student support network and is generally available to registered students of the University of Glasgow, undertaking undergraduate or post graduate degrees. International students enrolled with the Glasgow International College are advised to seek support from the college's Student Adviser, Emma Meredith, in the first instance, as referral to the Counselling Service must have approval from the college. Accommodation

Overseas students are guaranteed a place in accommodation provided they have accepted an unconditional offer to study and their completed application form is received by 22 August in the year of entry.

Campus

Combining a campus-style environment with the benefits of being in a major city, the University of Glasgow has two main city campuses: Gilmorehill in the cosmopolitan West End; and Garscube, 6.5 km (4 miles) from the city. A third campus is located in Dumfries some 145 km (90 miles) to the south of Glasgow.
Both city campuses have excellent transport into the city centre via frequent buses and subway. Glasgow International Airport, Glasgow Prestwick International Airport and two city centre rail terminals offer easy connections with the rest of the UK and the world.

Health centre

The University of Glasgow has a full range of on-campus health facilities with doctors, nurses and dentists. All students have full access to the health centre and all health care fees are fully covered by the National Health Service for full-time students.

Scotland's biggest city, Glasgow hosts the largest student population in Scotland and is in the top five most popular UK cities for visitors according to the Office of National Statistics.
