University of Salford

Overview

The University of Salford has approximately 20,000 students on the main campus on 60 acres of parkland on the banks of the River Irwell. The University of Salford is on the leading edge of research innovation in many fields, including virtual reality, magnetics and optics, genetic algorithms, building design and prosthetics. The university is also a founding member of the Northern Consortium.
Programmes are related to the world of work. As one of the first universities to offer 'sandwich' degrees, the University of Salford has a history of giving students job-related skills and experience. Many programmes have been designed in conjunction with employers - giving students a head start when it comes to graduation.
83% of the University’s research was judged of international class by the Government's latest Research Assessment Exercise. 12% was judged to be world-leading – at the very cutting edge. World-famous graduates include painter LS Lowry, comedian Peter Kay, actors Sir Ben Kingsley and Christopher Eccleston, and CEO of ASDA, Andy Bond.

Ranking

The University of Salford has given equal priority to enterprise alongside teaching and research for the past decade. Its commitment to making learning relevant to the outside world has contributed to the university being ranked in the top ten (out of all UK universities) for teaching excellence and top in the North West by a report in the journal Quality in Higher Education. According to the The Times, Salford "averaged 21 points out of 24 from 1996 onwards" on teaching quality grades, "with perfect scores for politics and biological sciences."
The University of Salford upholds a 84.73% student satisfaction and has a 18.6 student to staff ratio.

Campus

In 2011, the University of Salford will open a unique digital learning, teaching and research space at MediaCityUK. We will be located at the heart of six national BBC departments and hundreds of independent creative, digital and media organisations. Over 1,500 students will enjoy exceptional opportunities to work with media professionals using the very latest industry specified equipment, studios and labs. This will place them in prime position for digital and media careers. There will be 100,000 square feet of space filled with state-of-the-art technology right next to the BBC buildings. All parts of the University will be involved in working with the BBC and other tenants to create job opportunities for graduates, and benefit business and the local community. There will be four floors with HD TV studios, Radio broadcast studios, Digital media and performance labs, post-production suites, a living lab research facility, and meeting rooms with video conferencing.
The University building will be the only one at MediaCityUK which has a space open for everyone to use. To realise the community potential of this, an ambitious schedule of public events will welcome over 30,000 people a year to MediaCityUK. This approach is intended to help develop new methods of teaching and to drive interdisciplinary relationships between different schools and programme areas. It will help develop new and creative ideas and will be a true partnership between education and the community.
The desire if for MediaCityUK to be a genuine community, where collaborative relationships can grow and flourish. It's a concept reflecting the way the industry is moving, as the boundaries between 'new' and 'old' media become increasingly blurred. This is a brave new world which will require talented people from different disciplines to work together - MediaCityUK is a place where this can happen.

International Students

Sometimes it can be difficult coming to a new country and leaving friends and family behind. It can be hard getting used to different places and different ways of doing things. Being in a new place isn’t always easy. The University of Salford offers InterLINK, a way of introducing new international students to another student who knows about living in the UK and being a student at Salford.  InterLINK ‘mentors’ are home students (students from the UK) who can give international students friendly advice and support and help them to get used to living and studying at the University of Salford
For finance, visa renewals or any other issue, students can see one of the Student Advisers in Student Life.  Student Life in University House is also available any time from Monday to Friday, from 8.30am to 5.00pm. Student Life advisers will be able to answer most queries or direct students to the service that can best help them.

Location

The University of Salford is located only one and a half miles from the city centre of Manchester, England. It has a reputation for having a lively cosmopolitan lifestyle and vibrant city centre with a distinctive European feel. Add to this the tourist attractions, galleries, museums, superb shopping opportunities and striking Victorian architecture and the city that has something for everyone.
Over 70,000 students choose to live in Manchester, making it the biggest student population in Europe. They're attracted by a city that lives and breathes culture - from the celebrated music scene that revolutionised British culture to the creative hub of the city's Northern Quarter.
It's the home of all things sporting too - from its two famous football clubs (Manchester United and Manchester City) to the fantastic sporting arenas built when the city hosted the 2002 Commonwealth games.
And if you fancy getting away from city's busy atmosphere, then the Victorian parks are the perfect place for lazy summer picnics and walks. There're also three stunning national parks within easy access: the Peak District, Lake District and Snowdonia.
