It has over 17,000 students. Of the 8,500 full-time students, 10% come from outside the European Union, from a total of more than 60 countries. The University of Leicester is one of the UK’s fastest growing universities and recently instigated a GBP300 million campus development programme.

Ranking

The University of Leicester was ranked 14th in the Times Good University Guide 2009. Teaching ratings are good, with at least 22 points of 24 scored in all subjects. Full marks were awarded in Archaeology, Ancient History, Economics, Education, Museum Studies and Psychology. In addition, the National Student Survey 2005 ranked the University of Leicester joint first amongst UK universities teaching full-time students for overall satisfaction, teaching quality, academic support and personal development.

Services for International Students

The University of Leicester currently has students from over eighty countries enrolled on its courses. Each year, there are more than 1500 students from outside the United Kingdom studying the full range of subjects and degrees courses available. The University of Leicester’s International Office can provide all the information you need about applying for a course as well as advice on scholarships and English language programmes. The University of Leicester also has a Students' Union Officer with responsibility for international students, and several International Students' Advisers can provide support on issues such as visas, employment, finance and cultural adjustment.
The University of Leicester’s new International Study Centre offers EU and international students a direct path to an undergraduate degree at Leicester. The International Foundation Year starts in September 2008.

The University of Leicester has a wide range of accommodation options, from secure Halls of Residence popular among first year undergraduate students to self-catered accommodation in five locations near the campus.

Campus

With all teaching buildings within a few minutes walk of each other, the University of Leicester’s compact and friendly campus is an ideal place to be a student. Leicester train station is within walking distance of the campus and offers regular 75-minute services to London. Supermarkets, a cinema complex, local shops, bars and restaurants are all nearby.
The University of Leicester's buildings represent over a century of architectural styles which reflect our history and growth. The first University building, the Fielding Johnson, dates from 1837 and is a fine example of late Georgian architecture. Many of the more recent buildings have won architectural awards for design excellence.

Health centre

There is a full range of on-campus health facilities at the University of Leicester with doctors, nurses and dentists. All students have full access to the health centre and all health care fees are fully covered by the National Health Service for full time students.

Location

Leicester, with a population of more than 300,000, is a commercial and cosmopolitan city in the heart of England. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, Leicester lies 160km north of London (just over one hour by train) and within easy reach of many other major towns and places of interest - including Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, and both Oxford and Cambridge, the sites of the ancient universities.
