University of Huddersfield

Overview

The University of Huddersfield is a university in the town of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England. It has around 20,000 students and is located near the town centre. The Chancellor is the actor Patrick Stewart, who is originally from Mirfield. The University of Huddersfield traces its roots back to a Science and Mechanic Institute founded in 1825. The University of Huddersfield has scored highly for student satisfaction in the 2005, 2006 and 2007 National Student Surveys. The University of Huddersfield was also ranked joint first out of all Yorkshire universities for high quality staff and lectures in the Opinion panel Research survey in 2007. The University of Huddersfield has an international reputation for research in a range of subjects. The University of Huddersfield’s Centre for Precision Technologies is widely regarded as the best in the UK and one of the top three in Europe, and the new sonic research lab for music students will be the first of its kind in England. The University of Huddersfield is further developing its research and enterprise through significant new investment including the appointment of 20 new Professors.
The university is among the UK's top 10 providers of 'sandwich courses' where students undertake a paid work placement in industry or commerce. That's one of the reasons why they have an impressive record for graduate employment. Every year over 800 students take part in sandwich year placements in industry or commerce and another 1,400 take part in some form of shorter placement scheme.
Huddersfield has an international reputation for History, Music, Social Work, Engineering and Chemistry.  Our Centre for Provision Technologies is widely regarded as the best in the UK and one of the top three in Europe.  Our new sonic research lab for music students will be the first of its kind in England and the developments within our computer games studios led us to be awarded a contract by Microsoft in a recent international competition.

Ranking

Huddersfield was ranked 73rd in the Times Good University Guide 2011.

Services for International Students

The University of Huddersfield provides lots of information for international students recently arrived in the UK, concerning arrival, visa, intergration into British society. The University of Hudersfield Inernational office provides information on english preparation courses and additional support for new students.

Campuses

In addition to the main Queensgate campus in Huddersfield, the University has campuses in Barnsley and Oldham offering a wide range of full-time and part-time courses. Each University Campus has its own extensive library and computing facility, as well as access to the support facilities available from the University's main Huddersfield campus.
They form part of a multi-million pound initiative to make higher education more readily available to people in both towns and the surrounding area.

Accomodation

Huddersfield has some great accommodation for students and there are enough rooms in halls of residence for all our first years, so students can be sure that they'll have a safe and friendly place to live when they arrive here. The Storthes Hall Park Student Village and Ashenhurst Student Houses are recommended and approved halls. These are independent of the University and are privately owned and operated by ‘DIGS’. For second and final year students - and first year students who want to 'do their own thing' and arrange alternative accommodation - there are lots of options in and around Huddersfield giving students a wide range to choose from.
