Overview

Heriot-Watt University is the eighth oldest higher education institution in the UK. It originated as the School of Arts of Edinburgh in 1821 and, in 1966, became a University by Royal Charter. More than a quarter of Heriot-Watt’s 7000 on-campus students in Scotland are from outside the UK and this international focus is also demonstrated by the 10,000 students worldwide studying on its international programmes. Heriot-Watt University is one of the UK's leading research institutions having been rated at the highest level by the national review body, the RAE.

Services for International Students

Guidance and support for international students is provided by Heriot-Watt University International Students Advice Office (ISAO). They can help you with practical advice such as setting up a UK bank account, driving in the UK, registering with the police for visa renewal, local travel arrangements, the details of embassies and consulates in Edinburgh and much more. The International Student Guide also provides much of the information that you will need.

Accommodation

The accommodation service allocates places on campus. There are approximately 4,500 students studying at Heriot-Watt's Edinburgh campus and just over 1800 residential places are available. The majority of these places are allocated to new students.

Campus

Heriot-Watt has three main campuses: the Edinburgh Campus, the Scottish Borders Campus in Galashiels, and most recently, the Dubai Campus in Dubai Academic City. In addition the Orkney Campus in Stromness is home to The International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT) which is part of Heriot-Watt University's prestigious Institute of Petroleum Engineering. The main campus, on the outskirts of Edinburgh is among the most modern in Britain.

Health centre

There is a full range of on-campus Health facilities at Heriot-Watt University with doctors, nurses and dentists. All students have full access to the health centre and all health care fees are fully covered by the National Health Service for full time students.

Location

Travel links with Heriot-Watt’s Edinburgh and Scottish Borders Campuses are excellent. Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital city, so national and international travel links are well developed. The Scottish Borders Campus is in Galashiels, an attractive market town, just one hour south of Edinburgh by road.
Direct air links to and from Edinburgh are growing all the time, as the city continues to develop as a major European financial, business, cultural and tourism hub. The airport is only five minutes by car from the Edinburgh Campus and there are regular direct flights to London (only one hour), Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Brussels, Zurich and New York, to name but a few.
