At City we prepare our students for business and the professions and we are committed to meeting the changing educational needs of individuals, employers and society. It is as a result of this that the University has an excellent graduate employment record; we are ranked 10th in the UK for graduate employment in The Times Good University Guide 2010.  Most of our courses at undergraduate level include a work placement, which is an invaluable opportunity for students to gain work experience while they study.

University Profile

City University London is renowned for its international focus, the employability of its graduates and its links with business and the professions. It is made up of seven schools based in and around the City of London, teaching across a range of subjects in law, journalism, music, informatics, social sciences, engineering, mathematical sciences, business, health and community sciences.
City has over 21,000 students from approximately 150 countries, while teaching staff are drawn from over 40 international locations.
The University was founded in 1894 as the Northampton Institute and was awarded full university status in 1966. It established the first aeronautical laboratory in the UK a hundred years ago in 1909 and now runs the world’s largest Master’s course for the air transport industry - the University celebrated 100 years of aeronautics teaching in 2009. A quarter of City students study business, a quarter health subjects and the remaining half law, computing, social sciences, engineering, journalism, and the arts. City has one of the highest proportions of postgraduate students of any UK university.

City University London is ranked 21st in The Guardian University Guide 2010. City recently entered the top 500 in the 2009 QS World University Rankings.

Services for International Students

Around 30% of the University’s undergraduate and postgraduate students come from overseas (outside the EU), contributing to our diverse and lively student population and representing one of the highest proportions of international students in the UK. The University has dedicated International Student Advisors, based within the Student Centre, who are available to offer advice and assistance to all international students who are studying, or thinking of studying, at City University London. Some examples of the support offered to international students are:
  • Comprehensive pre-arrival information published on our website providing guidance on everything from setting up a bank account to UK immigration issues
  • Special welcome events for international students at the beginning of term as well as induction and orientation events organised by Schools and Departments
  • The Students’ Union has a range of international student societies which hold social events throughout the year.

Accommodation

All University halls are within walking distance of the University, are self-catered and offer computer and telephone points in every bedroom.
Accommodation is guaranteed for first year undergraduate students provided their application is submitted on time.

Graduate Prospects

The University prides itself on being the university for business and the professions, so links with industry are very important. City has close relationships with many professional institutions and businesses, both at home and abroad and our industry connections feed directly into our teaching and research. This enables City to provide courses which are not only relevant to business today, but are also highly sought after by students and their prospective employers.
In The Times Good University Guide 2010 and The Complete University Guide 2010, City University London ranks 10th in the UK for graduate employment.

Investment

Development is continuing at the University’s headquarters in fashionable Islington, with many of the classrooms being upgraded with audiovisual equipment. The £4.2 million Cass Business School opened in 2002, £20 million was invested in the impressive building for the School of Social Sciences, and the Students’ Union was refurbished in 2008. In addition to this, the School of Arts has benefited from a £12 million investment and now houses state of the art recording and television studios. The School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences invested in new facilities in 2009, creating four new interactive classrooms, as well as a modern electronics laboratory. The University has recently opened its newly renovated library, revealing the results of a £2.3 million overhaul project, as part of its commitment to boost services available to City students. The benefits include more space, upgraded technology and support.

Academic Strengths

Business
Cass Business School is amongst the world’s leading business schools, ranked in the top 50 by the Financial Times. Located in the heart of the financial centre of London, and with 3000 students Cass is the biggest business school in London.  The location brings a range of real benefits: our neighbours are global businesses, institutions and professional organisations; networking opportunities are on the doorstep and are second to none.  Our teaching staff combine internationally recognised academic talent, with years of experience in industry.
Law
City Law School is the only law school in London educating students and practitioners at all stages of legal education.  Our postgraduate and professional programmes are taught in the centre of legal London and our students benefit from excellent links with the four inns of court.
Journalism and Social Sciences
Our recently opened state-of-the-art multimedia studios and digital newsrooms give our journalism students relevant and real-life practical experience during their time at City. 
Our social science teaching and research benefits from its location in our recently opened purpose built building, offering diverse programmes within the social sciences that are informed by our research and provide high quality education.
