Overview

The University of Manchester is a traditional university located in Manchester, the third largest city in the north of England. The University of Manchester is world-renowned for its academic and research excellence.
In 2007/08 the University of Manchester had over 40,000 students studying 500 academic programmes, more than 10,000 staff and an annual income of £637 million and it is the largest single-campus University in the United Kingdom (the federal University of London is largest overall). The University of Manchester is a member of the Russell Group and was named University of the Year 2006. This followed the awarding of the inaugural Times Higher Education Supplement's University of the Year prize in 2005.

Ranking

The University of Manchester was ranked 40th in the world annual league table published by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. The University of Manchester has made steady progress in the rankings, from 53rd in 2005 to 50th in 2006 and 48th in 2007. In addition, the University of Manchester has risen to sixth in Europe from ninth place last year.
The University of Manchester offers an exceptionally wide range of subjects for undergraduate and postgraduate study. 37 subject areas achieved 5 or 5* in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), and over half of the University of Manchester's departments have attained maximum scores of excellence in external teaching assessments.
More students try to gain entry to the University of Manchester than any other university in the country, with more than 60,000 applications for undergraduate courses alone. According to The Sunday Times, Manchester is ranked very high in most subject areas, but most notably in the life sciences, engineering, humanities, economics, sociology and the social sciences.
Many notable and famous people have worked or studied at one or both of the two former institutions that merged to form the University of Manchester, including 23 Nobel Prize laureates.

Health centre

The University of Manchester has a full range of on-campus health facilities with doctors, nurses and dentists. All students have full access to the health centre and all health care fees are fully covered by the National Health Service for full time students.

Location

Manchester, located about 3 hours North of London by train, is a city with a world famous reputation for sport (especially football) and culture. The city is home to some of Britain’s finest art galleries, theatres, museums and live music - popular, underground and classical.
